Police in Lacey Township, New Jersey arrested a woman after a ShopRite shoplifting investigation involving a self-checkout theft and an alleged fake return scam, according to this police bodycam video. On March 26, 2024, at approximately 4:12 PM, Patrolman Kevin Tranz with the Lacey Township Police Department responded to ShopRite at 344 North Main Street for a reported shoplifting incident. Inside the loss prevention office, store personnel told police that a female customer had entered the self-checkout area earlier that morning and paid for only some of the items in her cart before leaving the store with additional unpaid merchandise. According to the investigation, surveillance footage showed the woman taking a Mario Kart toy from a shelf, bringing it to customer service as if it were a legitimate return, and receiving $44.99 in store credit. Police said she then used that store credit to purchase only part of her items while allegedly leaving with an additional $182.03 worth of unpaid merchandise. Loss prevention officers provided Patrolman Tranz with surveillance footage, receipts, and the license plate number of the white 2019 Jeep Compass the suspect allegedly used to leave the store. After reviewing the evidence and searching law enforcement databases, officers identified the registered owner and responded to a residential address in Lacey Township. At approximately 5:09 PM, Patrolmen Tranz and Carver arrived at the residence, located the vehicle, and made contact with a woman matching the description seen on surveillance. After being advised of her Miranda rights, she initially denied wrongdoing. Officers then arrested her on shoplifting-related charges. According to the report, as she exited the residence, she vaped in Patrolman Tranz’s face before officers took the vape pen and escorted her to the patrol car. She was transported to the Lacey Township Police Department, where she was fingerprinted, photographed, processed, and charged with shoplifting and theft by deception. After processing, she was released pending a future court appearance. This video is shared for educational, documentary, and public-interest reporting purposes. The footage and case documents were obtained under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, also known as OPRA. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
