RICHARD LEE McNAIR — THE MAN IN THE WHITE TANK TOP Born: December 19, 1958. Duncan, Oklahoma. His brother's words: "He is about the smartest person I've ever met." THE MURDER (1987): November 17, 1987. Minot, North Dakota. McNair broke into a grain elevator to rob it. Two men surprised him inside. He shot truck driver Jerome Theis dead. He shot the second man four times. That man survived. Sentence: Two life terms for murder and attempted murder. Plus 30 years for burglary. ESCAPE #1 — THE LIP BALM (1988): Handcuffed to a chair at Minot PD with three detectives. In his pocket: a tube of lip balm. He greased his wrists and slipped the cuffs when they left the room. Led police on a foot chase through town. Jumped from the third floor of a building. Injured his back. Recaptured. ESCAPE #2 — THE VENTILATION DUCT (1992): North Dakota State Penitentiary. He and two inmates crawled through a ventilation duct. The others were caught within days. McNair stayed free for 10 months. Captured in Nebraska in July 1993. ESCAPE #3 — THE MAILBAG (2006) — THE MASTERPIECE: McNair arranged his own transfer to USP Pollock, Louisiana , claiming it was closer to his parents in Oklahoma. In reality: he had studied the prison for months. He knew where every camera pointed. He knew when every guard shift changed. He knew exactly where the repaired mailbags were shipped. This is a 2006 dashcam recording from the Ball, Louisiana Police Department. It is a government law enforcement record — public domain under the Louisiana public records law.
