A combat veteran with 21 years of United States military service and two combat tours overseas confronted multiple Saint Petersburg Police Department officers at a public park in Saint Petersburg, Florida, after witnessing them sitting idle for nearly an hour while active drug dealing was reported just blocks away near 43rd Street and 15th Avenue. The veteran, who identifies as a First Amendment auditor, approached the officers to request their names and badge numbers under Florida law and captured the entire encounter on camera. What followed was a direct and powerful confrontation about police accountability, wasted taxpayer dollars, and the constitutional duty of law enforcement to serve and protect the community. The veteran schooled the officers on their obligation to actively patrol the area, pointing out that crack cocaine was being sold nearby while they remained seated in a public park doing nothing. He referenced his own family connection to law enforcement, noting his sister in law served 25 years as a narcotics detective and homicide investigator in New York. He also addressed the deeper issue within American policing, stating that the worst enemy of any police officer is a bad cop who trains others poorly, the kind of systemic failure that leads to excessive force, civil rights violations, and communities losing trust in the officers sworn to protect them. When one officer claimed she was typing a report, the veteran was not convinced and warned that he would contact their supervisor and share the footage publicly. He obtained badge numbers from every officer on scene, including badge number 577, and made clear he would file a formal complaint with the Saint Petersburg Police Department regarding their failure to perform their duties In April 2025, the City of Saint Petersburg approved a $2.5 million settlement for Heriberto Sanchez Mayen, a 62-year-old homeless man left paralyzed and a double amputee after a false arrest by SPPD officers. Officers Sarah Gaddis and Michael Thacker arrested him for trespassing; he was allegedly unrestrained in a police van, thrown during a sudden stop causing severe spinal injuries, and then dragged unconscious from the vehicle. The federal lawsuit alleged false arrest, battery, and excessive force. A judge dismissed claims against Officer Gaddis but allowed battery and excessive force claims against Officer Thacker to proceed. The city paid $200,000 upfront, with the rest subject to state approval; funds are in a trust for his ongoing care.
