#news #police #arrest An 18-year-old woman identified as Coyoete Turner was discovered on September 3, 2023, near the edge of a peanut field in Columbia County, about 60 miles west of Jacksonville. Investigators determined that her body had been partially burned, and several burned items were discovered underneath her. But one item immediately stood out. Detectives found an envelope containing a letter from a medical office. The letter had an address in Live Oak, Florida, so investigators decided to follow that lead and visit the home. That's where they found 47-year-old John Leonard Bowen. Bowen was a registered sex offender who investigators say was staying at the Live Oak home and using someone else's vehicle to get around. However, that wasn't the address he had registered with authorities. His registered address was actually near the area where Coyoete had been found. Because of that discrepancy, Bowen was taken into custody on September 7 for violating his sex offender registration requirements. At this point, investigators were still working to officially identify Coyoete. Then her mother contacted the sheriff's office. After seeing a Facebook post about an unidentified woman being discovered, Coyoete's mother told investigators she hadn't heard from her 18-year-old daughter in about 24 hours. During that conversation, detectives learned about another connection that made Bowen even more significant to the investigation. A woman who identified herself as Coyoete's aunt told detectives that Coyoete had actually lived with her for a period of time several years earlier. The aunt's boyfriend at the time was John Leonard Bowen. So now detectives had a letter from the scene leading them to an address where Bowen was staying, his registered address was near where Coyoete was discovered, and they learned that Bowen already had a previous connection to Coyoete. With Bowen already behind bars on the registration charge, detectives brought him in for questioning. According to the arrest report, Bowen made several statements about Coyoete's death but allegedly changed parts of his story during questioning. He also claimed other people were present, leading investigators to look into whether anyone else could have been involved. Authorities later obtained additional evidence as the investigation continued. The medical examiner determined that Coyoete's death was a homicide and that she had died from trauma. Then, on October 30, nearly two months after Coyoete was discovered, Bowen was officially charged with first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with evidence. Investigators said the case wasn't over and continued looking into Bowen's claims that other people may have been involved. But the clue that initially helped detectives connect Bowen to the investigation was something that could've easily been overlooked — a single letter found underneath Coyoete at the scene.
