On March 7, 2026, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a solo-vehicle crash on Parkway Drive, south of Emily Lane, in Del Norte County, California. The driver was traveling southbound on Parkway Drive at a stated speed of approximately 25 miles per hour when the Chevrolet Traverse veered left, crossed over the solid double yellow lines, crossed the northbound lane, left the roadway, went down a steep embankment, and crashed into two trees before coming to rest. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was later contacted at Sutter Coast Hospital. The driver initially told officers he did not know what happened and could not remember the crash. The driver later claimed he dropped coffee in his lap and became distracted, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. CHP officers later inspected the vehicle and reported finding no evidence of spilled coffee or a coffee cup inside the driver compartment. The report also noted there were no scald marks or redness on the driver’s legs to indicate that hot liquid had been spilled. While speaking with the driver, CHP officers observed signs of possible drug impairment, including an unsteady gait, droopy eyelids, appearing to be in a stupor, thick and slurred speech, and difficulty forming sentences or expressing thoughts clearly. After the driver was medically cleared at Sutter Coast Hospital, CHP requested that the driver perform field sobriety tests. According to the report, the driver was unable to perform the tests as explained and demonstrated. The driver was placed under arrest for 23152(f) CVC — driving under the influence of a drug. The driver consented to a blood sample at Sutter Coast Hospital but later refused to comply with a drug recognition evaluation. The driver was booked into the Del Norte County Jail on the following reported charges: 23152(f) CVC — Driving under the influence of a drug 647(f) PC — Public intoxication Arresting California Highway Patrol Officers listed in the report: Officer S.
