On January 29, 2018, Nancy Enoksen — a 49-year-old Jericho-based attorney practicing in Nassau County, New York — was convicted by a jury on one count of second-degree grand larceny under New York law after prosecutors proved she had stolen more than $187,000 from a client's attorney-controlled escrow account between 2013 and 2014. Enoksen had advised a Bellmore woman who settled a personal-injury lawsuit for more than $400,000 to place those funds into an escrow account Enoksen maintained on her behalf, representing it as a safe holding arrangement. Without her client's knowledge or authorization, Enoksen made repeated withdrawals from that account, directing the stolen funds toward her own law practice expenses, payments on a BMW, personal shopping, and travel to Canada. The Nassau County District Attorney's Office prosecuted the case as part of a broader effort that pursued more than twenty attorneys for misconduct. Following a seven-day jury trial, Nassau County Court Judge Howard Sturim sentenced Enoksen to three and one-third to ten years in state prison plus full restitution. In a detail that underscored the precision of the loss, bail was set at exactly $187,000 — the precise amount her client never saw returned.
