Police body camera footage shows a Kalamazoo officer taking fire from a robbery suspect, with what appears to be a spark from a bullet inside the officer’s cruiser. Kalamazoo Public Safety released the body cam footage Monday, Aug. 15. The officer came under fire about 8 p.m. Saturday while responding to a report of a robbery in the 2100 block of South Burdick Street. Police said that, after the robbery, the suspect crashed his vehicle and was running. An officer in a cruiser came upon the suspect in the 4300 block of South Burdick Street. At that point, the robber fired at the cruiser. The moment happens about 40 seconds into the released video. In the body cam video, just before the shots, the officer can be heard telling dispatchers that the suspect is running through Candlewyck Apartments along South Burdick Street near Pratt Road. “He’s armed with a rifle. He’s got a long gun,” the officer says excitedly. Then he shouts “Shots fired! Shots fired!” A spark can be seen inside the cruiser at that moment. The officer then stops the cruiser, retrieves his rifle and begins pursuing the suspect. He talks into his radio while moving in the direction of the robber, telling dispatchers that “I took one round.” The officer begins yelling to the suspect, “Stop police! Stop police” before moving behind to the edge of a brick building for cover. At that point, more shots can be heard and the officer again yells “Shots fired! Shots fired!” The officer continues to take cover behind the building and radios his position to other officers. Police said the armed man was able to escape. The store robbed by the man was Tienda Guatemalteca at 2111 S. Burdick St. Police said shots were fired there too, but no one was injured. Nene Velasquez, the store owner, said he was laughing with a customer Saturday when he saw a man walk in carrying a large rifle and wearing a face mask. He said he immediately went into the office behind his cash register and closed the door. Velasquez called 911 and laid on the floor as the man fired six to eights shots through the closed door. The customer then ran out the backdoor before the shooting started and was not injured, Velasquez said. The man who shot through the door left without taking money and before police arrived, Velasquez said. The back door of the grocery store was shattered in the shooting, but that will be repaired, he said.
