On August 3, 2021, Michigan State Police locate a silver SUV connected to an armed robbery at a convenience store, where witnesses reported shots fired. When troopers attempt a traffic stop, the driver flees, speeding through stop signs and red lights in a dangerous pursuit. The chase ends violently when the SUV loses control and slams into a utility pole. A responding sergeant becomes trapped beneath live power lines as emergency crews rush to secure the scene. Both the suspect and the injured officer remain conscious as first responders work under extreme danger. The suspect, 57-year-old Dwayne K. Smith, is later charged with multiple firearm and fleeing offenses. After failing to appear in court, he remains at large for years before being captured during a SWAT operation involving a K9 unit. He is later convicted and now faces decades in prison.
