On May 12, 2023, deputies responded to a chaotic disturbance at a federal beach restoration project. Police arrived after a dump truck operator reported a male was jumping in front of heavy machinery and blocking their path. Officers located the man, who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and hallucinating. This bodycam shows the moments officers gave the man lawful commands to move, which he refused. When deputies attempted to physically guide him away from a bulldozer , a physical struggle ensued on the sand. The suspect continued to actively resist, prompting an officer to deploy a Taser 7 for three drive stuns, which proved unsuccessful. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly threatened, "I'm going to bite you" and opened his mouth near a deputy's leg in an attempt to bite him.
