The community is left with more questions than answers, in regards to the officer-involved shooting involving a Mount Shasta police officer on Christmas morning, as limited information has been released by officials. The shooting took place during the early morning hours of Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2023, onboard Amtrak's southbound Coast Starlight while en route to Dunsmuir from its previous stop in Klamath Falls, Ore. Amtrak officials say the train's crew called police as they approached Mount Shasta due to "erratic behavior" from an onboard passenger, identified as Nicholas Detweiler. They say responding officer Jeramiah Capurro with the Mt. Shasta Police Department (MSPD) got into a physical altercation with Detweiler, leading to Capurro discharging his firearm and fatally shooting Detweiler. Amtrak officials also confirmed the train's assistant conductor was standing nearby when the shooting occurred and was struck in the gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The BWC Video shows the suspect grabbing the officers taser with both hands and punching the officer in the head nearly causing him unconsciousness. The suspect then removes a glove and equips Knuckle Dusters prior to punching the train worker and putting him in a head lock.
