A woman was stopped on A1A in Flagler Beach, Florida after an officer watched her drive erratically across the center line, nearly strike the median twice, and make an abrupt U-turn back toward the beach. She told Officer Schneider her mother was having a stroke and had stage 4 cancer, that she was coming from her father's house, and that she had eaten meatloaf and watched Lord of the Rings all evening. She said the cup on her dash was iced tea. The officer found a High Noon can thrown behind her seat, still cold, with alcohol running down the upholstery and pooling on a box on the floorboard. Her account of where she had been changed several times. The officer had already seen her vehicle pass him fifteen minutes earlier heading the opposite direction. She then refused standardized field sobriety exercises. Asked why, she said she had watched too many videos about it. The officer explained the adverse consequences under Florida law and offered repeatedly to let someone come pick her up if she could dispel his suspicion. She declined every time. She was placed under arrest for DUI. Her mother arrived at the scene a short time later. She confirmed she has terminal cancer, told officers she had instructed her daughter to comply, and told her directly through the patrol car window that she was drunk and should have cooperated.
