Authorities say 29-year-old Jake Wenzel went to a residence on 268th Avenue, where members of his girlfriend’s family lived. Earlier in the evening, Wenzel had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend’s sister. After leaving the home, the woman returned later and parked in the driveway, quickly running inside through a back entrance, believing the confrontation was not over. Investigators say Wenzel soon arrived at the home in a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck. He reportedly exited the vehicle holding a handgun and approached the woman’s car, demanding that she come outside. The homeowner—another family member—confronted Wenzel and ordered him to leave the property. Instead, Wenzel allegedly turned toward the house and fired at least one round into the residence before fleeing the scene in his truck. The shooting triggered an overnight search as deputies attempted to locate the suspect. Wenzel’s pickup was later discovered abandoned in a wooded subdivision, prompting law enforcement to issue a shelter-in-place warning for nearby residents while the search continued into the next morning. Detectives eventually tracked Wenzel to a motel in Union Grove. When officers attempted to make contact, Wenzel fled again, leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit through rural Racine County. Officials say the chase ended after Wenzel jumped a curb and continued driving until a tire failed, forcing the truck into a muddy field near the Ellsworth Correctional Center. When Wenzel attempted to escape on foot, two sheriff’s K-9 units were deployed, successfully apprehending him and bringing the pursuit to an end. No serious injuries were reported. Wenzel, who authorities say has a prior criminal history and was already out on bond at the time of the incident, was taken into custody. He now faces multiple felony charges across both Kenosha and Racine counties in connection with the shooting, pursuit, and arrest.
