While on routine patrol in Patrol Vehicle #11, I observed a southbound vehicle cross the center line, nearly entering my northbound lane. I turned around to follow the vehicle, noting a non-operational rear brake light. The vehicle again crossed the center line, prompting me to initiate a traffic stop. Approaching the vehicle, I observed a sole female occupant who didn't immediately acknowledge me. After identifying myself and advising about my body camera, I detected a strong odor of alcohol. The driver denied drinking but mentioned taking Suboxone. She appeared to slur her words, later claiming she has a lisp. When asked to exit the vehicle, the driver mentioned her mother was on the phone and coming to the scene. At the rear of the vehicle, she admitted to texting while driving when confronted about her erratic behavior. I conducted standardized field sobriety tests, starting with Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. The driver again mentioned Suboxone use. During the test, she asked to adjust her zipper and mentioned being pregnant. I observed several indicators of impairment during the eye tests. For the Walk and Turn test, the driver mentioned past leg surgery. She complained about her balance and her sneakers, opting to remove them. Her performance was unsteady, with multiple balance issues and failure to follow instructions. She made several comments during the test, including that her "balance sucks" and "this isn't even a game." During the One Leg Stand test, the driver insisted I count for her, claiming she's "not good at math." She struggled significantly, stating, "You all get paid for this s***?" and "My balance sucks, I didn't do ballet." She mentioned being pregnant and having a broken foot. After the tests, I placed the driver under arrest for DWI. At the station, she became uncooperative, repeatedly demanding a lawyer and refusing to provide breath samples. She made various arguments and accusations throughout the booking process. The driver was eventually released to her mother and issued multiple summonses. My body camera was active throughout the entire encounter. The driver was charged with: • DWI • DUI in a School Zone • Reckless Driving • Vehicle in Unsafe Condition • Failure to Maintain Lane • Failure to Provide Breath Samples • Maintenance of Lamps • Driving with Suspended License • Use of Handheld Device while Driving -------------------------------------------------------------------------- All videos and case documents were obtained pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Records Act, N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. (P.L. 2001, c. 404). Defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty. This channel is made strictly for educational and news gathering purposes.
