On August 13, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers with the Key West Police Department responded to Trumbo Point Naval Base in Key West, Florida, following reports of a bomb threat made toward the military installation. According to the police report, a man driving a green Mazda sedan approached the base entrance but was denied access by a U.S. Navy security guard after it was determined that he was not authorized to enter. As the driver was leaving the base, the security guard returned his driver's license, at which point the man allegedly stated, "I have C4 and I could blow up the base if I wanted to." The driver, later identified as Jonathan D. Mathews of Indiana, then drove away. Due to the nature of the threat, Navy personnel immediately notified dispatch, prompting a response from multiple law enforcement agencies. Officers began searching the surrounding area for the suspect vehicle. At approximately 7:00 p.m., a detective located a green Mazda matching the description near Home Depot and conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of The Capitana. Mathews was ordered out of the vehicle and detained in handcuffs while officers investigated the reported threat. During the investigation, Mathews reportedly acknowledged making statements about C4 and explosives to the security guard. According to the police report, he also discussed military base security and testing how personnel would respond to threats. Officers obtained his consent to search the vehicle for weapons or explosives. The search revealed a dive knife, but no explosives or additional weapons were located. The security guard was later brought to the scene and positively identified Mathews as the individual involved in the incident. Following the investigation, Mathews was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Detention Center. He was charged with one count of threatening to discharge a destructive device, a second-degree felony under Florida law. Watch the body cam footage as Key West officers investigate the reported bomb threat, locate the suspect vehicle, and question the driver about his statements toward the military installation.
