On July 8, 2024. An officer from the Menomonie Police Department observed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed and appeared to be racing. Both cars were side by side traveling approximately 75 mph in a posted 35mph zone. The officer pulled out of the parking lot he was sitting in and activated his emergency lights. Both vehicles briefly applied their brakes before accelerating at a high rate of speed. The officer quickly terminated the pursuit, however one of the vehicles was located shortly after when the driver crashed into a light pole and into a large boulder. As officers arrived on scene, they observed a female, later identified as Maya, digging in the front passenger side of the vehicle. She stated she didn't know who the driver was or where they went. An officer observed another female walking away from the scene, who was later identified as a juvenile. At that time, Maya was secured in handcuffs and placed into a squad car. The officer made contact with the female juvenile who requested EMS stating that her foot was in pain. The juvenile was also asked who was driving the vehicle but she stated she did not know and that it was an Uber. Back at the vehicle, officers observed both front airbags had deployed and also noted that there were two televisions in the back seat. Based on multiple items in the back seat, officers initially did not believe someone would have been able to fit in the back seat. The juvenile was later able to provide evidence that she was indeed sitting in the back seat during the crash. While searching the vehicle, a written warning from the UW-Eau Claire Police Department written out to a female named Azlana was located. After the search, an officer spoke with Maya and asked her to be honest and say who the driver was. She stated, "this mixed girl I don't know her." Maya continued to say the operator was a friend of a friend who was just giving her a ride home. She also denied knowing who was operating the other vehicle they were racing. Officers checked the Uber app on the Juveniles phone and did not see any recent trips documented. EMS transported the juvenile to the hospital, and Maya eventually admitted that it was her girlfriend “Azlana” who fled and crashed. Maya initially agreed to call Azlana to see where she was so officers could question her, but later stated she didn't want Azlana to think the “snitched” and asked the officer to call her himself. The officer agreed to do so and offered Maya a ride home. Maya accepted the ride and was dropped off at her residence. Before she went inside, the officer provided his business card and told Maya to have Azlana contact him or she would be receiving a warrant for her arrest. The next day, Azlana called and agreed to meet with officers about what had occurred. When officers arrived, they met with Maya and Azlana and explained that they were both under arrest. Azlana for fleeing and Maya for obstruction. Maya asked why she was under arrest and it was explained to her that she was also being arrested because she initially lied about not knowing who the driver was. Another officer successfully conducted a traffic stop on the other fleeing vehicle. Unfortunately there was a formatting error with the Body and Squad Cameras, and the footage is unavailable. The driver (Jose) was arrested and is facing charges for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer, and 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety. Azlana, the driver of the vehicle that crashed is currently facing charges for Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer, 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Reckless Driving-Cause Bodily Harm, Failure of Operator to Notify Police of Accident, Unreasonable and Imprudent Speed, Failure to Keep Vehicle Under Control, Non-Registration of Vehicle, and Improper Right Turn. The juvenile passenger who was injured was released without any charges, and Maya is facing an Obstructing an Officer charge. This video is for educational purposes only.
