On June 14, 2023, police in Athens, Georgia, responded to multiple calls about a suspicious man causing a disturbance in a neighborhood. Witnesses reported that he was knocking on doors, chasing a young woman, and scaring residents. When officers made contact, they found him disoriented, talking to himself, and wearing hospital scrubs, suggesting he may have recently been released from medical care. Residents confirmed he had been running toward people and banging on doors, raising concerns for safety. Officers tried repeatedly to identify him, but he refused to give his name or provide ID, only muttering what sounded like “Bender.” At one point, he advanced on officers with clenched fists, forcing them to restrain him. Because of his aggressive behavior and refusal to cooperate, officers determined he was likely experiencing a mental health crisis but ultimately chose to arrest him for disorderly conduct and obstruction. Since he could not be identified, they planned to confirm his identity through fingerprinting at the jail. The man was transported without further incident and booked on the charges.
