As he approached the Honda Pilot SUV, passenger Nelson Troche, 32, of Schenectady, suddenly reached across driver Alicia Eriole, 31, also of Schenectady, and opened fire with a handgun, striking the trooper in the arm.. Trooper Albert returned fire despite his injury. Eriole accelerated to flee, but a passing logging truck driver heroically rammed their vehicle to stop it. The couple then attempted to carjack a nearby pickup truck at gunpoint but failed. Alicia Eriole was arrested on scene and sent to prison. Nelson Troche fled on foot and died of self-inflicted gunshot wound. Trooper Richard Albert recovered from his gunshot and was honored as Trooper of the Year. He has been promoted to Sergeant.
