A 21-year-old man in Mt. Vernon, Illinois came to the attention of federal investigators after a major social media platform flagged activity on his account and submitted a report to authorities. An ICAC detective with the Homeland Security task force showed up at his front door. He answered every question. He admitted to everything. When investigators asked to see his phone, it was gone. He said he broke it when his girlfriend left him. Then he admitted it was in the woods — and walked a deputy out to retrieve it. It was destroyed beyond repair. Weeks later, deputies returned with an arrest warrant. He was taken into custody without incident. He was sentenced to 30 years in state prison.
