Police officers responded to a dispatch regarding a motor vehicle accident involving a completely dislodged fire hydrant. The nineteen-year-old driver initially denied responsibility before admitting to striking the hydrant while reversing. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and noted the driver had bloodshot and watery eyes. After fumbling for her license, the driver admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the night. Officers conducted standard field sobriety tests which the driver failed to complete successfully due to a significant loss of balance and an inability to follow instructions. The driver was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters for processing. Following an initial equipment error, the driver was transported to a neighboring jurisdiction where she provided a breath sample resulting in a 0.15% BAC. The underage driver received multiple citations for offenses including driving under the influence and careless driving before being released to a relative. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
