A 19-year-old woman is stopped by police after a reported shoplifting incident. The officer asks her to put her car in park. She claims it's already parked. Seconds later, she hits the gas—with the officer still holding onto her vehicle. On August 14, 2026, officers from the Covington Police Department in Georgia responded to a shoplifting report at a nearby Walmart. Police located a white Kia Optima connected to the investigation at a QuikTrip gas station along Highway 142. Behind the wheel was 19-year-old Destinee Riggins. As an officer approached the driver's window, he instructed Riggins to put her vehicle in park. But what happened next turned an ordinary investigation into a dangerous emergency. According to police, Riggins suddenly accelerated while the officer was still holding onto her vehicle. The officer was dragged across the gas station parking lot before falling onto the pavement. Despite being injured, the officer managed to radio for assistance and provide information about the fleeing vehicle. Bystanders rushed to help as additional officers responded. The injured officer was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with scrapes, bruises, and other injuries. He subsequently recovered and returned to duty. But the driver was still on the run. After a search, police located and arrested Riggins. She faced multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing and eluding, and shoplifting.
