On February 5, 2023 at 3:39am officers with the Marion Police Department were dispatched to a report of multiple shots being fired in the area of 15th and Florence. One of the complainants stated that the suspect vehicle was a gold in color SUV. An officer with the Marion Police Department located a gold in color SUV and initiated a traffic stop in the 3000 block of South Curfman. The driver, identified as William White (age 34), exited the vehicle, ignored the officer's commands and fled on foot. The officer gave chase and tazed Mr. White, but the tazer was not effective. Mr. White produced a handgun and it fell to the ground. Mr. White was given multiple verbal commands and continued to disregard them while advancing towards the officer trying to grab his service weapon. Mr. White then reached to the ground and picked up the weapon. The officer fired once striking Mr. White. The officer then communicated with dispatch that shots were fired. Responding units arrived and assessed Mr. White's injuries. The Marion Police Department is releasing the body cam footage of this incident along with this press release. The officer is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Indiana State Police investigation.
