It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On May 11, 2025, at about 5:34 p.m., Sergeant Richard Huegel of the Sea Bright Police Department spotted a gray 2017 Mercedes-Benz almost hitting a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The spot was at Ocean Avenue and Peninsula Avenue. Huegel had stopped his car to let a family cross safely. But the Mercedes sped through from the other way without braking. The pedestrian grabbed his child's hand just in time to dodge it. Once the family made it across, Huegel swung into a U-turn. He chased the car and pulled it over in the Sea Bright Supermarket lot. He walked up to the driver, who turned out to be Gwendolyn Wisely. She had no ID on her. Later, she pulled up her car's insurance on her phone to show him. As they talked, Huegel smelled booze on her breath. He saw other signs she might be drunk. Wisely said she had a drink earlier that day. She claimed she was fine, though. Huegel told her to say the alphabet from A to Z. She couldn't get it right. He asked her to count to 30. That came out all jumbled too. Right then, she mentioned her son worked as a cop. Her shaky state led to more tests. First came the one-leg stand. Wisely didn't lift her foot the right way. Her arms swung out. She wobbled a lot. Next was the walk-and-turn. She missed heel-to-toe steps. Her turn was all wrong. With the smell, her words about drinking, and those failed tests, Huegel arrested her for driving drunk. They towed her car for a 12-hour hold under John's Law. He took her back to the Sea Bright station. There, he read her the standard warning for drivers. She agreed to blow into the breath machine. The Alcotest showed 0.295% blood alcohol—over three times the 0.08% limit. She brought up her son again, saying he was on shift in Fair Haven, New Jersey. They let her go to her son, Timothy Wisely. He signed the liability form for her, until court. Huegel handed out tickets: driving under the influence, code 39:4-50; reckless driving, 39:4-96; not stopping for a crosswalk pedestrian, 39:4-33. Wisely had a past DWI bust in Rumson on February 23, 2021. She got another ticket there on April 9, 2023, for an unlicensed dog. 2:15 I’m sorry I didn’t expect this to happen (saying the ABCs) … 9:38 she comes off like little miss smarty pants.
