It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Early on April 7, 2024, police saw a car going the wrong way. It was about 1:19 AM. The location was near N Adams Avenue and Monmouth Avenue. Officer Ryan Mazzeo pulled over the 2019 Kia Optima. He asked the driver for her license and registration. The driver was Alexa, age 24. She said she was coming from Tomatoe’s. This restaurant is in Margate. Alexa told police she had one martini before driving. The officers thought Alexa was impaired. So, they asked her to do field sobriety exercises. Alexa first took the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Next, she tried the Walk and Turn test. She did not touch heel-to-toe each time. Also, she struggled to count in order. Finally, Alexa did the One Leg Stand test. She was not able to raise her foot the right way. Alexa's night took a turn after a traffic stop. She admitted to drinking alcohol. Field sobriety tests did not go well. Officer Mazzeo arrested Alexa for driving under the influence. Her car was impounded. John’s Law mandated a 12-hour hold. Police then took her to the Margate City station for processing. Alexa faced the Margate City Police. After hearing her rights, she gave breath samples. Officers watched her for 20 minutes. Then, she gave up her Miranda rights. Alexa said she had two martinis earlier. The first test showed 0.10% BAC. The second was 0.096%, reduced to 0.09%. The legal limit was 0.08%. After paperwork, Alexa went home with her parents. They signed a form for her. She got tickets for drunk driving, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way. Alexa's court case took an unexpected turn on August 26, 2024. Her OUI charge was reduced to reckless driving. The other two tickets? They were dropped completely. Alexa's driver's license was suspended for just one month.
