On May 23, 2025, in Tahoe City, California, California Highway Patrol officers responded to a reported hit-and-run crash on Sequoia Avenue near SR-89 involving a white BMW that struck a parked boat trailer before fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash and observed the vehicle speeding away shortly after impact. Officers began searching the area and located the suspect vehicle just minutes later on SR-89, where it was found stopped on the shoulder. A CHP officer found a driver asleep behind the wheel, and her bodycam recorded the encounter. The driver showed multiple objective signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, red and watery eyes, and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving and performed poorly on her field sobriety tests. A preliminary alcohol screening test produced results of approximately 0.170%, 0.198%, and 0.195% BAC, the driver was placed under arrest and transported to Tahoe Forest Hospital for medical clearance and while at the hospital she provided breath samples for the chemical breath test the results were 0.17% and 0.18% BAC, more than twice the legal limit in California. Investigators determined the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence when the crash occurred, striking the left side of the parked trailer before fleeing the scene and continuing onto SR-89. The driver was booked into the Nevada County Jail on the following charges: Listed Charges: 23152(a) CVC – Driving Under the Influence 23152(b) CVC – Driving with BAC of 0.08% or Greater 20002(a) CVC – Hit and Run 14601.2(a) CVC – Driving on a Suspended License 23758 CVC – BAC Enhancement Over 0.15% California Highway Patrol Officers involved: Officer Rikki S Parent ID - 022961 Officer L.
