a sergeant responded to an emergency call about 2:45 a.m. at a Shell Gas Station on 35th St. in Galesburg. Dispatch reported a 911 call from RV Johnson, 22, asking them to send police to the gas station, but did not say what the emergency was. When the sergeant arrived, he was confronted by Johnson with a knife, according to the sheriff's office. Body camera video showed Johnson lunging at the sergeant multiple times. In the video you an hear the sergeant repeatedly ask Johnson to drop the knife. Johnson continued to point the knife at the sergeant and the sergeant fired a single shot. Johnson died on scene, the sheriff said. “At the end of the day, our goal is preservation of life and ultimately, at the end of the day, sometimes that’s not what we’re able to do," Fuller said. Fuller said this was a difficult situation that happened fast. He said the sergeant was alone on scene and called for backup before he pulled the trigger. "It’s pretty evident in the beginning of the video that the officer doesn’t know that he’s going to be confronted and things happen fairly quickly," Fuller said. Fuller said the sergeant is a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. The sergeant was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.
