On February 2nd, 2024, officers in Washington were dispatched to a local McDonald’s parking lot in the early hours, responding to reports of an unwanted person camping inside a van. The caller, an employee of the restaurant, expressed concern over the van, which was noted for its windows covered in purple paint, obscuring any view inside. Upon the officer's arrival, they observed what appeared to be a person under a blanket inside the vehicle through the rear window. The officer approached and made contact with the individual after announcing their presence and seeing movement inside. The encounter quickly escalated when the individual inside the van, identified as the vehicle's registered owner, became argumentative after being informed he could not camp on the property. Despite the officer's attempts to explain the situation and suggest alternative locations for legal camping, the individual questioned the officers' actions and refused to comply with requests to identify himself or vacate the premises. This defiance led to a tense standoff, with the individual resisting officers' instructions to exit the vehicle and subsequently refusing to cooperate with efforts to detain him for trespassing and obstructing the investigation. The situation culminated with the individual being forcibly removed from the vehicle, resisting arrest, and ultimately being handcuffed and detained. Despite the initial resistance, the suspect was transported to the local jail.
