On May 27, 2026, Jamario Sanford — a 38-year-old Greenwood, Mississippi police officer — was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to aid and abet, and attempt to aid and abet, the possession, transportation, and distribution of illegal narcotics, following a sweeping FBI public-corruption investigation into law enforcement across the Mississippi Delta. Sanford accepted $12,800 in bribe payments — the first $5,000 delivered directly by an FBI agent posing as a Mexican cartel member — in exchange for providing armed police escort for what he believed was a shipment of 25 kilograms of cocaine moving through Leflore, Sunflower, and Washington counties. He also recruited fellow officers to assist with the staged transports. The investigation, which culminated in indictments unsealed on October 30, 2025, swept up approximately 20 individuals, including more than a dozen current and former law enforcement officers and two county sheriffs, all accused of accepting bribes to guarantee safe passage for drug loads through the Delta. Chief U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown of the Northern District of Mississippi imposed the sentence, adding three years of supervised release. Among the communities most affected were residents of rural Delta counties who had called 911 trusting that the officers answering were there to stop the drug trade — not escort it through their neighborhoods.
