SOUTH BEND, INDIANA — BODYCAM FOOTAGE On June 16, 2026, South Bend Police responded to the 400 block of Corby Boulevard following a report involving an unwanted party and a man reportedly armed with a firearm. According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, officers encountered 35-year-old Jujuan Bates, who was reportedly armed with a revolver. During the encounter, officers attempted multiple less-lethal options, including a Taser and pepper balls. Police said Bates eventually stopped and fired his revolver into the air. Three South Bend officers then discharged their firearms, striking Bates. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office later determined the shooting was criminally justified under Indiana self-defense and defense-of-others law, and no criminal charges were filed against the officers. The investigation was also referred to the South Bend Police Department for review of potential policy or procedure violations.
