On December 14, 2025, just after noon, California Highway Patrol officers were conducting speed enforcement along U.S. Highway 199 near the Collier Tunnel in Del Norte County, California. California Highway Patrol officers observed a blue Chevrolet Silverado traveling northbound at a high rate of speed in a posted 55 mph zone. Radar confirmed the vehicle was moving at approximately 77 miles per hour while passing other traffic. CHP officers stopped the driver in the Collier Tunnel rest area near the Oregon border without incident. During the traffic stop, officers identified the driver as a solo male occupant and conducted a license check. Records indicated the driver’s license was suspended out of Oregon due to a prior DUI-related restriction requiring the use of an ignition interlock device. Officers observed that no ignition interlock device was installed in the vehicle. The driver was cited and released at the scene and advised not to continue driving. Charges cited in the incident include: • CVC 22349(b) — Speed in excess of 55 miles per hour • CVC 12500(a) — Unlicensed driver • CVC 23247(e) — Driving without required ignition interlock device All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
