On the 7th of July 2022, at approximately 10:00 pm, a Rio Rancho Police Department officer was on duty when he witnessed a Volkswagen GTI traveling eastbound which appeared to be traveling at a speed above the posted legal limit. Radar was utilized to confirm the speed of the vehicle showing its speed was 73 MPH in a 40 MPH speed zone. Shortly after the vehicle passed the officer's patrol unit again and the officer reported the suspect's vehicle was “still under heavy acceleration.” Officer started following the suspect's vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect's vehicle then stopped at a traffic signal where details were called to dispatch as well as other units. However, before the officer could gain distance to safely perform a traffic stop the driver accelerated and drove away. The officer then activated his sirens and followed the suspect's vehicle. After getting a visual of the suspect's vehicle the suspect appeared to slow down before fleeing again at high speed. The suspect proceeded to accelerate at high speed while passing other vehicles and through a 35 MPH construction zone before the officer lost visual of the suspect's vehicle. Another officer who was patrolling in the area witnessed the suspect's vehicle stopped at an intersection and notified dispatch. The primary witnessing officer began traveling to the location of the second officer where the suspect was currently stopped. On arrival, the primary officer positioned their car by the passenger door of the vehicle. The suspect was “a white male with brown hair” and appeared “young” according to officers' reports. A female passenger was also noted in the vehicle. The officer yelled “Pull the car over” before the suspect accelerated at high speeds and fled the scene. Officers regrouped at the residential address associated with the vehicle to possibly talk to someone at the residence. When officers arrived they were met by the suspect's mother who was worried for her son's welfare. Officers informed the woman that her son fled from officers while attempting to conduct a traffic stop. She confirmed that the Volkswagen GTI was her vehicle and that her son was driving it that night. The woman told officers she had been trying to contact her son but he was not responding. Officers suggested she call her son and ask him to return to the residence. The woman promptly called her son who answered before hanging up. After calling again she convinced her son to return home who said he was in a location 20 minutes from the residence. Officers agreed to wait 20 minutes for the suspect's arrival. After 20 minutes the suspect pulled up to the driveway of the residence in the Volkswagen GTI. Officers shined a flashlight as he exited the vehicle as the sole occupant. The suspect greeted the officers when they exited the vehicle before being asked to place his hands behind his back and was arrested. Officers informed him that he was under arrest for Reckless Driving and Fleeing and Eluding.
