Decatur, Illinois — October 12, 2022: Around 12:30 a.m., Decatur Police officers initiated a traffic stop on 32-year-old Jamontey O. Neal, believed to be in possession of a firearm. The situation escalated rapidly when Neal opened fire on officers, striking two of them—Sgt. Timothy Wittmer and Officer Bowman—at point-blank range. Sgt. Wittmer was shot multiple times, including in the hand, foot, and head, yet managed to clear a jammed weapon and return fire while lying wounded on the rain-soaked pavement. Officer Bowman sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. All four officers on scene—including Macon County Sheriff's Deputy Travis Wolfe—returned fire, fatally striking Neal.
