On August 2, 2024, a shoplifting incident involving theft over $200 occurred at the Gucci store located at 1200 Route 124, Suite A220, in Short Hills, New Jersey. The incident was reported to the Millburn Police at 15:45. Officer Marcus Dalakian responded to the scene and interviewed the store manager, Kristin Carrano, who provided access to CCTV footage of the event. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Rahkmann Green from Orange, New Jersey, entered the store and requested to see merchandise. Staff members uncabled a black Gucci backpack valued at $2,980.00 and a black Gucci belt valued at $490.00 for Green to try on. Green then exited the store without paying, wearing the backpack and holding the belt in his hand. When store employees attempted to stop him, Green denied taking the merchandise, asking, "What items?" despite the goods being visibly in his possession. The total value of the stolen property was recorded as $3,470.00. Following the theft, mall security reported that Green was located at a nearby bus stop, where Police Officers Strumolo and Shanahan responded and detained him. Officer Dalakian arrived on the scene and positively identified Green based on the store's surveillance footage. After being read his Miranda rights, Green initially denied the theft but asked if returning the items would result in his release. He subsequently admitted that the backpack belonged to Gucci and that the stolen belt was inside it. Green was placed under arrest at 16:00 and transported to police headquarters for processing. The arrest report notes that Green is unemployed and lists a gang affiliation with the Crips. He was charged with Shoplifting under N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11B(1) and released pending a court appearance set for September 18, 2024, at the Essex County Courthouse. The stolen items were recovered, and photographs of the merchandise were submitted to records. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
