Belgium. 1982. Three men — known only as the Giant, the Killer, and the Old Man — began attacking supermarkets in the Belgian province of Brabant. They wore face paint and masks. They carried military-grade weapons. Over three years they struck at least sixteen times — Delhaize and Colruyt supermarkets, restaurants, homes. They killed 28 people. Wounded 22 more. The haul was almost never worth the violence. In one attack they left with wine, champagne, and coffee. In one restaurant attack — the owner was killed and nothing was taken at all. Investigators eventually concluded the money was never the point. The killing was the point. The worst single attack came on November 9, 1985, at a Delhaize supermarket in Aalst. Eight people were killed. Among them was the family of 9-year-old David Van de Steen, who survived with serious injuries. His 7-year-old sister screamed "Don't shoot — that's my dad!" before the Killer shot their father anyway. Both David's parents and his sister died in that supermarket. After November 1985 — the gang stopped completely. No more attacks. No arrest that prompted the cessation. No death. No explanation. They simply ceased. One weapon used in the attacks was traced to the Belgian gendarmerie's own armoury. The gang's knowledge of police response times and security procedures was consistent with insider access. The leading theory, seriously considered by investigators and a parliamentary inquiry: the Brabant Killers were current or former Belgian law enforcement or military intelligence — connected to NATO's Operation Gladio network — running a deliberate campaign of terror designed to destabilise the Belgian state. Belgian parliament voted multiple times to extend the statute of limitations on the killings. Governments do not extend statutes of limitations on supermarket robberies. Investigators examined 1,815 pieces of information, compared 2,748 sets of fingerprints, tested 593 DNA samples, and exhumed more than 40 bodies. In June 2024, the case was officially closed without identifying any of the three men. The most recent arrests connected to the case were of the original lead detectives themselves — for alleged evidence tampering. The people assigned to find the killers may have helped them stay hidden. David Van de Steen has spent his entire adult life publicly demanding answers. He was 9 years old in that supermarket in Aalst. He is still waiting. If you need help — reach out. You are not alone. Like and subscribe to GraveFile TV — new file every week. The original detectives were arrested for evidence tampering in their own investigation. What do you think they were hiding?
