A routine traffic stop takes an unexpected turn when a driver, suspected of impairment, invokes constitutional rights and refuses to comply with an officer's direct order to exit the vehicle. The incident began around 1:57 PM when an officer, working an extra duty assignment in a church parking lot, was alerted by staff from a nearby school about a potentially impaired teacher who had just driven past. The officer quickly located a silver 2015 Hyundai driving slowly towards a landscaping trailer and initiated a traffic stop. Upon contact, the driver, appearing visibly distressed and claiming a panic attack, also exhibited clear indicators of impairment, necessitating a call for backup officers to take over the specialized DUI investigation. As the responding officers attempted to proceed, the driver, who revealed she had been instructed to leave the school, initially refused to exit her vehicle to perform field sobriety exercises and attempted to invoke her Fifth Amendment rights. Despite this initial resistance and a request for a supervisor, she eventually complied, though her subsequent performance on the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand tests demonstrated significant impairment, including improper turning, incorrect steps, and an inability to maintain balance, leading to her arrest for driving under the influence.
