On May 10, 2024 the Massachusetts State Police rescued a suspect from the Connecticut River after they say he rammed a trooper during a traffic stop and fled the area. Just after 8:00 PM on Friday, a Massachusetts State Trooper pulled over a vehicle in the area of Holyoke for unspecified motor vehicle violations. During the stop police say the driver suddenly reversed, ramming the troopers vehicle, before fleeing the area. Shortly after the collision the vehicle was once again located in the area of Saint Kolbe Drive in Holyoke, unoccupied and abandoned. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing 2 began searching the area for the suspect from the traffic stop. Using thermal cameras, the Air Wing quickly located a person, ducking behind the retaining wall of the Connecticut River, in the area of Saint Kolbe Drive. The Air Wing was able to direct officers to the location of the individual in the water. As troopers on the ground located the individual it was quickly determined that he had been injured and was struggling in the water. Troopers utilized their Water Rescue Throw-Bags that are carried in their cruisers to keep the suspect above the water while they got a life jacket to them. With hypothermia setting in, several Holyoke Police Officers and Massachusetts State Troopers worked together to hoist the individual out of the water. The individual was transported to an area hospital with unknown, non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers determined that this was the individual who fled the earlier traffic stop. His charges have not been released at this time.
