September 24th, 2023. 1:31 a.m. A Costco distribution center in Frederick County, Maryland. A welfare check: a truck driver yelling, bleeding, smashing the inside of his cab. This is the case of Candice "Kochie" Thompson. 🚚 The Detour Matthew Watley, 46, was supposed to deliver pineapples to Jessup, Maryland by 11 p.m. His boss couldn't reach him. The truck's GPS was off or not working. The truck turned up about 50 miles away. 🚔 The Standoff Deputies offer water, food, clean clothes, a prayer. He won't turn off the engine. He drives over stop sticks. They chock every wheel. Pepper spray doesn't work. They break a window and use a Taser. 😨 The Cab Inside, a deputy finds Candice Thompson, 46, on the floor of the cab. She is pronounced dead at 3 a.m. According to charging documents, police in New Jersey had a long history of domestic calls between the two. ⚖️ The Sentence Watley pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. On November 20, 2025, Judge Scott Rolle sentenced him to 40 years — the maximum. Her mother told the court: "I don't want to live after what this monster did to my daughter."
