Officers from the Belleville Police Department responded to reports of a package theft on Naples Avenue. The suspect was located riding a bicycle against the flow of traffic on a one-way street while carrying a package. When officers attempted to stop the suspect, the individual fled on foot toward Newark Avenue holding a knife. The suspect was tackled by a sergeant but continued to resist arrest. An off-duty police officer in the area observed the pursuit and assisted the units in placing the suspect into handcuffs. A search of the suspect revealed a glass pipe, the secured knife, and multiple stolen debit and credit cards belonging to different victims. Officers also retrieved the stolen package containing clothing and baking plates valued at $102, which were returned to the rightful owner. The suspect was issued traffic summonses and charged with theft, resisting by flight, obstructing the administration of law, possessing a weapon for unlawful purposes, and multiple counts of credit card theft before being transported to the correctional facility. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
