A shocking body camera video shows Smithfield, Utah City Councilman Ted Stokes in a heated confrontation with police officers. In the footage, recorded on Aug. 3, 2025, Stokes angrily challenges two officers who came to his home to take a report for his son’s minor car accident. This video sparked community outrage and led to his resignation Stokes repeatedly instructs the officers on how to do their job, insisting he’ll “deal with this” himself and telling them to “patrol Main Street” instead. At one point he yells, “Your guys’ lack of training blows my mind,” and accuses the officers of mishandling routine duties. He even questions the need for both officers and taunts them with personal questions, all while stepping back onto his own yard to assert his authority. The exchange escalates when Stokes calls the city manager, calling the situation “unbelievable” and vowing to defund the department. He declares, “I will do everything in my power as a City Council member to make sure these guys are defunded. There will be five police officers in this town because this is unbelievable”. This outburst went viral and drew sharp criticism. Other council members and the mayor released a statement condemning Stokes’ actions as “rude, unprofessional, and demeaning.” After the backlash, Stokes issued a public apology, admitting he “lacked the proper judgment” and acknowledging the officers “deserved his respect and professionalism". He expressed regret for letting his emotions override civility. On September 20, 2025, he submitted a resignation letter, stating that despite his earlier concerns about the police department, he realized he was wrong to act as he did and resigned “to protect his family.” Watch the video above for the edited highlights of this confrontation and my analysis of what unfolded afterward. The councilman’s fiery interaction and the ensuing fallout show how quickly a routine police call can spiral into controversy.
