On March 9, 2025, a 23-year-old woman and a 46-year-old woman entered the Las Cruces Walmart store. They loaded up a shopping cart full of items, pretended to use a credit card to pay, and then attempted to walk out of the store without actually paying for the merchandise, which totaled $291.14. Loss Prevention Agents was able to get the merchandise back, but the two women left the store on foot. Officers located the two women as an Asian Buffet restaurant and detained them. They initially denied being in Walmart, but Officers reviewed the surveillance footage from Walmart and positively identified the women as the suspects. They were placed under arrest for Shoplifting (over $250 but under $500) and were both transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Online court records show the prosecutor dismissed the charges against the women without prejudice.
