On June 12, 2023, Las Cruces Police Officers were called to Walgreens, where the store manager reported that a habitual shoplifter came to the store to steal two bottles of alcohol. Officer Martinez located the 26-year-old man about 10 minutes later and attempted to detain him. The man fled on foot, but Officer Martinez deployed his taser and was able to place the man under arrest. The man was taken to the hospital before being medically cleared for jail. The end of the video shows Officer Martinez returning to Walgreens to review the security footage with the store manager. The man, who has been arrested at least 20 times, was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. However, both charges were dismissed by the prosecutor in January 2024.
