The man, later identified as 38-year-old Michael McDermott, began riding away as the deputy attempted to speak with him. Deputy Murphy activated his emergency lights to conduct a stop, and McDermott initially slowed down as if he intended to comply. The moment the deputy stepped out of his car, McDermott suddenly rode off again, turning onto Westminster Drive. When the deputy followed, he saw McDermott reach into his waistband and pull out what appeared to be a firearm. Fearing the situation was about to escalate, Deputy Murphy struck McDermott with his patrol vehicle to prevent a potential armed confrontation. The impact knocked McDermott off the bicycle and caused him to drop the weapon. Backup arrived within seconds, and deputies secured McDermott without further resistance. A loaded 9mm Ruger handgun was recovered nearby, along with a holster on McDermott’s waistband. McDermott, a convicted felon with a long arrest history in Flagler County, was taken to the hospital for a minor ankle injury before being booked into the detention facility. He now faces multiple charges, including: Assault/Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer Fleeing and Eluding Resisting with Violence Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon McDermott had recently been released from jail in December 2024 after serving a 90-day sentence for possession of fentanyl.
