On December 8, 2022, Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped Corey Drew as he was driving out of the Thousand Trails Verde Valley RV campground near Cottonwood, Arizona. Within seconds he was told he was under arrest for disorderly conduct, then accused of resisting arrest, and deputies threatened to break his truck window. Minutes later a lieutenant stepped in, the situation calmed down, and one of the deputies apologized on camera before Corey was released. In this police video breakdown, we walk through the full encounter, the legal questions behind it, and the aftermath that followed once his video went viral. Corey is a full-time Thousand Trails member who travels the country in his RV. The night before the stop, he had a dispute with a campground employee over his service dog. The next morning he texted security several times asking for the manager's name, and he used the word "escalate" in one of those messages. Security called 911, and deputies arrived believing they were dealing with a disorderly, threatening man. The story didn't end at the campground. Corey filed a complaint with the sheriff's office the next day and posted the video on his YouTube channel, Chem Before The Storm, where it went on to get over a million views. According to court records, Lieutenant John Johnson later ordered campground employees to be re-interviewed. In February 2023, Corey was arrested on a warrant and charged with seven counts, including disorderly conduct, threatening or intimidating, resisting arrest, failure to provide identification, and failure to comply. A state judge later ruled that deputies had arrested him without probable cause, in violation of his Fourth Amendment rights, and dismissed three of the charges. The remaining four charges were also dismissed. Corey was never convicted of anything. In 2024, Corey filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Yavapai County and members of the sheriff's office, alleging First Amendment retaliation for posting his video and filing complaints. A federal district judge dismissed most of the case, but in April 2026 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals revived his First Amendment retaliation claim against Johnson. The defense has argued that the investigation was reopened based on new information. The case is still ongoing, and the allegations in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.
