On October 29, 2025, Salt Lake City Police officers responded to a disturbance near 2100 South and 300 West after receiving a 911 call from a man who reported that his friend had been attacked in the middle of the street. During the call, the man told dispatchers that the victim was “starting to wake up,” but the call was abruptly disconnected. When the call taker called the number back, the man briefly said, “Send somebody,” before hanging up again. Two officers were dispatched to the area, where several witnesses confirmed that some kind of altercation had taken place. Officers then contacted 47-year-old Jose Hernandez, who was sitting on a curb nearby. Despite being offered medical assistance, Hernandez declined and refused to answer questions about whether he had been assaulted or involved in the incident. Without warning, Hernandez began placing landscaping rocks into the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt. Officers instructed him to put the rocks down, but Hernandez ignored commands, stood up, and began walking away. He then pulled out a rock and held it in his right hand, refusing multiple orders to drop it. As officers told nearby bystanders to move away for safety, Hernandez walked south along the sidewalk, then suddenly ran across 300 West. Upon reaching the corner of 2100 South and 300 West, Hernandez turned toward an officer and threw a rock, striking or attempting to strike the officer. The officer responded by firing at least one round, hitting Hernandez. Officers immediately detained Hernandez, provided lifesaving medical aid, and called for paramedics to expedite their response. Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel arrived and transported Hernandez to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The officer involved sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was treated at a nearby hospital. 0:00 - Description of events 0:09 - 911 call 1:44 - Officer 1 bodycam 6:14 - Officer 2 bodycam 7:00 - Shooting ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video may contain footage and audio that some viewers could find disturbing.
