Incident Date: August 10, 2023 Location: West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana Agency: West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office In the early morning hours of August 10, 2023, deputies from the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office engaged in a pursuit involving a stolen 2018 Nissan Pathfinder out of Alexandria. The vehicle, driven by 18-year-old Kameron Gaston, failed to stop and ultimately crashed — bursting into flames. Three of the four occupants were killed on impact, two of them burned beyond recognition. They were later identified through fingerprint and dental analysis as Kameron Gaston (18) and 21-year-old Kortez “Smokey” Morris, both from Alexandria. A third occupant, believed to be a juvenile, was also killed. The only survivor, 19-year-old Davonte Stubbs, was pulled from the wreckage with critical injuries and later interviewed by detectives. Stubbs admitted that the group had driven down from Alexandria with the intent to “rob somebody” and confirmed that at least two of the occupants were armed. He stated that he begged the driver to stop but was ignored. It was also learned that they were wearing body armor at the time of the crash. After his release from the hospital, Stubbs was arrested and charged with: Principal to Possession of Stolen Things (LARS 14:24/69) Principal to Criminal Mischief (LARS 14:24/59) Investigators later confirmed that the group had been involved in prior burglaries in the Baton Rouge area. The Glock recovered from the crash scene is believed to have been stolen from Alexandria. Case status: permanently closed for three suspects Pending adjudication for Stubbs who is now out on bail
