On June 10, 2023, deputies in Monroe County, Florida, responded to a 911 call from a security guard patrolling the parking lot of a Holiday Inn. The security guard witnessed a woman striking her male companion and throw his sunglasses on the ground. Upon arriving, police witnessed the woman charge the man aggressively, and made an arrest. Matters were complicated, however, when the would-be victim declined to press charges, leaving the trio of deputies to brainstorm on how best to apply the letter of the law.
