On August 31, 2025, at approximately 1:10 a.m., LAPD Southwest Division officers were conducting extra patrol at a liquor store near 9th Avenue and West Jefferson Boulevard. Officers made contact with 33-year-old Malik Salaah, who appeared to be concealing a firearm. As officers attempted to detain him, Salaah removed a handgun from his waistband and fired multiple rounds at officers, both inside the store and as he exited. Officers returned fire, striking Salaah. He fled on foot but was later taken into custody after a perimeter was established. Officers provided immediate medical aid until Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived. Salaah was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. An unloaded 9mm pistol with a high-capacity magazine was recovered at the scene. Salaah was booked for the attempted murder of a peace officer. No officers or community members were injured during this incident.
