[Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only] York Region/Toronto, Ontario, Canada — On June 20, 2024, York Regional Police (YRP) tactical units intercepted an attempted hit on a senior correctional manager at their Markham residence. The suspects, including two masked youths and an adult male, had been observed scoping out the property two days prior. During the police intervention, the hit team attempted to evade capture by driving across a residential front lawn, causing significant property damage before colliding head-on with a parked police cruiser. Officers immediately swarmed the vehicle and arrested the occupants, seizing a loaded handgun. This confrontation was the catalyst for Project South, a massive investigation into a series of shootings, extortions, and robberies across the Greater Toronto Area, including eight separate shootings between June and September linked to the same criminal cell. The investigation revealed that the intended target was a senior official at the Toronto South Detention Centre, with media reports indicating they were singled out because of their success in curbing contraband smuggling within the correctional system. Authorities determined the hit team obtained the victim's private address after Toronto Police Constable Timothy Barnhardt unlawfully accessed restricted police databases. By February 2026, the probe exposed a deep-seated corruption ring and resulted in charges against 18 individuals, including seven current Toronto police officers and one retired constable. The gravity of the case involves systemic misconduct where officers reportedly accepted bribes to protect illegal cannabis dispensaries and leaked confidential data to facilitate violent crimes. Charges against the various accused include conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to commit murder, breach of trust by a public officer, and the large-scale trafficking of controlled substances, including fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
