On May 11th, 2025, a woman was detained at Sunglass Hut inside Savannah Hilton Head International Airport after loss prevention captured her on surveillance concealing sunglasses in her pocket and exiting without paying. What began as a straightforward misdemeanor shoplifting case quickly became a two-count arrest when she attempted to discard the stolen merchandise inside a bathroom during active investigative detention. The legal turning point was a single decision — accessing a restroom while under investigation. Under Georgia law, concealing or disposing of evidence with knowledge that an investigation is underway is a separate criminal offense entirely. The shoplifting charge did not disappear because the merchandise was recovered.
