#news #police #arrest #cops Offenses: DUI - Adult beverages - Less Safe Failure to Maintain Lane Report: On 08/05/2023 at 02:25 Officer responded to the intersection of Cobb Street and King Avenue in reference to a single- vehicle collision with the driver being possibly impaired. The 911 caller who is a nurse at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, stated that a pickup truck had collided with a tree near this intersection. The 911 caller stated that the driver appeared intoxicated. Other officers and I arrived on scene shortly after and observed a black pickup truck to be against a tree and heavily damaged. When I arrived on scene, the driver, identified as Carolyn Griffin, was sitting on the curb speaking with other officers. When I approached Griffin, I observed her to be displaying the following physiological indicators of impairment by Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants such as alcohol: ● Depressed reflexes ● Severely slurred speech ● Severe disorientation ● General confusion and lack of awareness ● Glassy eyes ● Strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her mouth as she spoke Griffin informed other officers that she was leaving her workplace which she stated was "Flicker Bar" located in Downtown Athens. Griffin's vehicle, aside from the damage from the tree, had significant damage to the passenger side including white paint transfer that appeared to be from another vehicle; however, officers were unable to locate a vehicle that Griffin struck in the area. While speaking with Griffin, we asked her to stay where she was, but she continuously attempted to either walk away or get into her vehicle. After Griffin attempted again to get into her vehicle, I placed her under arrest for driving under the influence. Officer read Griffin the State of Georgia Implied Consent Notice requesting a blood sample and Griffin refused. Officer read Griffin the Miranda Warnings; however, she would not answer if she understood them, just remaining silent. Griffin admitted multiple times through spontaneous utterance that she had been drinking alcohol and that she has not drank for a while until this incident, although Griffin did not state how much alcohol she drank. Officer walked across the street with Griffin to the Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center Griffin was extremely disorderly for most of the hospital stay, attempting to walk or run away from me multiple times, leading me to have to hold her down in a chair to stop her from fleeing. Griffin attempted to call 911 several times using a landline phone in the waiting room. Griffin complained several times that I was hurting her with the handcuffs; however, they were very loosely applied and double locked to prevent them from getting any tighter. Griffin continued to struggle and move her arms causing the handcuffs to move around frequently. Griffin did not comply with medical staff and hospital security for most of the hospital stay, continuously screaming and yelling for "help."
