On May 10, 2024, Officer Samuel Berthoud of the Dover, New Jersey Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop for a minor infraction. As Officer Berthoud exited his vehicle to speak with the driver, the driver suddenly fled, leading to a brief pursuit. The vehicle was observed driving recklessly, including the wrong way down a one-way street in an attempt to evade apprehension. Officer Berthoud was eventually able to stop the vehicle. The driver, a 20-year-old female, was found to be under the influence of alcohol with a measured BAC of 0.16%. Open containers of alcohol and other substances — later confirmed to be illegal to possess — were also recovered from the vehicle. The driver was arrested and charged with multiple motor vehicle and criminal offenses. On October 10, 2024, she appeared in court, pled guilty, and received a $740 fine, a three-month license suspension, 15 months of an ignition interlock and 12 hours in a mandatory drunk driver course.
